Since March of 2025, Next Interior Memos has been the newsletter of Next Interior, a project to build a constituency to support a strong US Department of the Interior. The newsletter isn't the entirety of the work of Next Interior, but it is a significant venue of information and communications.

Starting 14 September 2026, the newsletter will be published three times per week, each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, through early November. After that, Next Interior will transition to be a project of a new endeavor, Project Physean; more will be shared as that takes shape. Onward!

Unlike some daily newsletters, we're not quite a focused on getting new items out the door at a specific time, but we do have a general flow of publishing:

  • We publish the weekly digest on Thursday afternoons, occasionally Friday morning if Thursday is crazy. This run-down of the week's news as it relates to the Department's work and mission. The Thursday afternoon timing is designed to allow people to catch up before the last day of the week.
  • Every 2-3 weeks, usually on Tuesdays, we publish a newsletter that focuses on a single topic of relevance to the Department, usually with a focus on current policies and future policy needs. Examples include a look at NEPA and permitting, and an overview of the costs of GenAI for the Department.
  • We occasionally publish "special" editions of the newsletter on Wednesdays, sometimes on the weekend, if timing is an issue. For example, we did a Sunday edition to summarize shutdown- and staffing-related news for Interior and an update on a disaster in Western Alaska.

Maintaining balance with other parts of life--like time with family--is important, so we tend to take holidays and vacations around the usual times as others in the US. These offer some time to reflect and rejuvenate. We try to avoid being away during known periods of high activity for the federal government, whether on the Executive or Legislative sides.
